- Two methods of sanding a wide board by hand are:
- Sanding along the grains.
Sand the piece along the grain with uniform strokes. The strokes should be long and smoothly done. - Sanding in circular motion.
Keep the hand in a circular motion to produce a smooth surface. Do not rub roughly but control your hand slowly in a circular manner.

- Procedure of applying shellac polish on a table top..
- Pour small amount of shellac into a container.
- Add equal amount of thinner.
- Dampen a rag with some thinner and wipe the surface to be fini hed.
- Dip brush about one third in shellac and wipe the sides of the brush on the container.
- Start at the center and brush toward the edges.
- Use long and even strokes.
- Allow the shellac to dry at least an hour (four to six hours is better).
- Sand the surface with fine steel wool of No. 5/0 garnet pape.
- Apply the other coats in that order.

- Drill two holes on the board. Holes drilled at corners.
- Insert the compass saw in one hole and cut in two directions.
- Insert in the second hole and repeat the process.
