- Soak in cold salty water to facilitate removal of mucus and blood stains
- Rinse off the salty water
- Wash the handkerchief in warm soapy water using kneading and squeezing

- Finally rinse in cold water into which a pinch of salt has been added to fix colour
- Dry under shade on a clothes line secured with pegs
