INTRODUCTION( 2mks)
When people become selfish, they push their interest before everyone else and in the process are blinded by that untamed self-interest this is evident in characters such Ole Kaelo, Oloisudori, Mama Milanoi and Olarinkoi .( Accept any other valid introduction i.e general /contextual/generalspecific.)
CONTENT (12 MKS)
Di Ole Kaelo
Ole Kaelo’s desire for money and prestige through contracts with Oloisudori leads him to sacrifice his two daughers to Oloisudori. He had long realized the choice was between remaining a nobody; self-righteously and accepting, sensibly, that the man with the knife was also the same man with the meat. Despite warnings from his friend and mentor Ole Supeyo to keep his daughters away from Oloisudori who is likened to a randy he goat due to his lust, he still goes ahead and maintains his business contracts with Oloisudori. Ole Kaelo felt that Supeyo was jealous of his recent success. Knowing well that Oloisudori has his hands in all sorts of businesses such as extortion, porching and murders, he upholds his contracts in order to save his business and house.
Later on, Ole Kaelo suffers blackmail and extortion from Oloisudori who demanded for Resian as his wife and Taiyo for his friend. He is emotionally disturbed by the outrageous demand that he cries bitterly for his two daughters whom he felt did not deserve such a fate.He results to having Resian being the sacrificial lamb but his plan backfires on him. Resian runs away from home after her confrontation with Oloisudori who made it crystal clear that she was betrothed to him. Ole Kaelo’s last resort is giving Taiyo who was his favourite to Oloisudori as consolation price. This plan also fails as Taiyo is rescued from Esoit village where she had been lured to be circumcised before being handed to Oloisudori. In the end Ole Kaelo loses both his daughters to Minik.
Dii Oloisudori
Oloisudori’s desire to marry Resian leads to a serious embarrassement at Minik’s ranch after he and his men are seriously beaten and his convoy burnt to ashes. Oloisudori has instantly fallen in love with the Resian when he first saw her their home. He had visited to do his usual extortion but changes his mind instantly on seeing Resian. He already had six wives and now he wanted Resian to be his seventh. He had loaned Ole Kaelo money to fund his shop at Nasila and building his home. Oloisudori had come demanding for his money, however, he changes his mind and instead demands for Resian. He tries luring her by building her a palatial home and even promising to allow her to continue with further education at Egerton University but Resian is still adamant as she had no plan of getting married to her father’s age-mate.
He makes arrangements for her abduction and circumcision before the forcefull marriage. Resian rus away from home after Oloisudori openly tell her that he had already paid for her bride price. After Resian confronts her father at the shop who confirmed her fears as true, she decides to commit suicide at Nasila river but is convinced otherwise by Olarinkoi who promised to rescue her. Eventually Resian is helped to escape by Nabaru who helps her reach Minik’s ranch. Taiyo who was to be Oloisudori’s wife is also rescued by Parmuat and Minik’s men who take her to Minik’s ranch.
Oloisudori finds out that Minik was hosting Kaelo’s daughters and goes there uninvited to demand for his wife to be. He underestimated Minik think that he will bulldoze his way out with either Resian or Taiyo but Minik does not allow him to have his way and has him beaten and his convoy burnt to ashes. He and his men had run away for their dear lives. This was humiliating for him and he ended up not having any of the Kaelo daughters due to his insatiable lust.
Diii Mama Milanoi
Mama Milanoi hopes to get prosperous through her future sons in-law. She knows that such a relationship between an old man and a young girl is not approved in Nasila but she doed not stand up for her daughters. She is torn between her loyalty to culture and her daughters. She chooses to please her husband by agreeing to start preparing her daughters for marriage by ensuring that preparations of their circumcision begins immediately as instructed by her husband. She is well aware of the hurt FGM will do to her daughters but she still continues supporting her husband absurd idea of having Resian abducted I case she does not go along with the plan of getting married to Oloisudori. Resian found comfort in her sister Taiyo because her mother was always silent whenever Ole Kaelo reprimanded her for no apparent reason. She was aware of the hate her husband had for Resian but did nothing about it. Her betrayal escalates when she is part of the plan to trick Taiyo to go Esoit village with the claim that Resian was on a hunger strike only to have her circumcised and awaiting a forcefull marriage to Oloisudori in place of Taiyo. Her daughters while at Minik’s ranch vow not to get marriage if what their mother lived through was it entailed. Milanoi failed in being her daughters’ role model and therefore ended up losing them.
Div Olarinkoi
Olarinkoi had uncontrolled desire to marry one of the Kaelo daughters according to his mother’s prophecy. He was always the silent guest at every meal at their home and would do odd jobs within the compound. He once saved the Kaelo daughters from being raped by the vagabonds and earned the trust of the entire family. Ole Kaelo made him the bodyguard of the girls and would monitor their movements. Resian finds out from Oloisudori that she had alredy been betrothed to him and decides to confirm from her father whether it was true only for worst fear to be confirmed true. Ole Kaelo is angry at Resian’s defiance and slaps her. Resian angry at her father’s betrayal declares that even if she lives to be eighty years old she will still attend Egerton University and become a doctor like Minik who is her role model. She runs away towards Nasila river and contemplates suicide. Olarinkoi appears and promises to take to Minik who will rescue her from getting married to Oloisudori. In real essence Olarinkoi took advantage of her desperate situation and took her to an isolated hut in Inkiito where he had planned to have circumcised, marry her and later elope to Uganda. Resian realizes that she had jumped from the frying pan into the fire when he demands that she cooks for him. Later that night he comes back drunk and tries to rape her Resian defends her dignity by biting his thumb savouring it he bled profusely and in his defense hits her knocking her unconscious. Nabaru nurses her back to health and in the days they spent together Resian shares with her how her father had already given her away for marriage to Oloisudori without giving her an option.Nabaru sympathises with her and promises to help her escape.Olarinkoi’s mother would keep watch over Resian’s recovery as she prepared to circumcise her. On the other hand since Olarinkoi had defied his mother’s prophecy by trying to rape Resian he was excommunicated for a while and could not go near Resian until she had been ‘cut’. Olarinkoi was embarrassed by his greed of wanting to take advatange of Resian and kept out of sight.Nabaru’s plan of helping Resian escape went as planned they were able to escape the night before Resian was to be circumcised in the end Olarinkoi because he greed ends up losing Resian who gets to meet Minik where she got a job at the ranch and is promised a scholarship to Egerton University.
CONCLUSION (2 MKS)
From the above illustrations it is quite evident that greed can only lead to suffering as experienced by Ole Kaelo , Milanoi, Oloisudori and Olarinkoi .( Accept any other relevant conclusion)

- The Short Story A Silent Song and Other Stories .
‘War can cause a lot of problems in our society and should be avoided at all costs’ Justify the above assertion using Gloria Mwaniga’s story ‘Boyi’
INTRODUCTION (2MKS)
Conflict destroys family ties and communal bonds. Family members are separated from one another, some are traumatized and others are killed as a result of conflict. In Gloria Mwaniga’s ‘Boyi’ the militia which should protect the community land ends up being the one terrorizing the community they vowed to protect. Below are illustrations showing the challenges the community faced as result of conflict within the community.(It can be general/contextual or both)
W1 Displacement
Conflict causes displacement of people who leave their homes in huge masses to Bungoma and Uganda. The family of the narrator’s friend Chemutai moves to Chwele. The villages of Kopsiro, Saromet, Chepyuk and Chebei are engulfed by a fog of fear. The did not understand the Militia’s motive anymore. The Militia took away girls to go cook for them. People’s heads were chopped off and bodies were thrown into river Cheptap-burbur. The Militia also raped their own relatives resulting to children born who were transparent as plastic bags. The narrator imagines Boyi’s children playing appearing transparent as the plastic bags. This horrifies her terribly. Since school is disrupted by the conflict such thoughts haunts the narrator and she spends most of her time idle under the flame tree at home.
W2 Family Disintegration
Most of the families are disunited from the rest of their members. The Militia demanded 40,000 land protection tax, 10,000 land protection tax and 30,000 betrayal tax. Boyi’s father could raise the amount and suggested giving away his savings, precious radio and hunting gun and promises to give his bull Mtabakaki to raise the cash but the Militia is adamant and threatens to kill his entire family. Therefore resulted to giving away Boyi who is only 15years old until he could raise the amount. Boyi’s mother falls into depression, talking in monologues. She shouts at her husband for giving their son away she tears her Kitenge head scurf and tells him that their son is not cloth that one gives away casually. Boyi’s mother and father’s relationship disintegrated as a result of them losing their son to the Militia. Baba tries to justify his action by saying that he had to give him away otherwise the entire family would have have been tortured to death. He, however, is saddened that the boys who had vowed to protect their land had turned on them like a hungry chameleon that eats its intestines. Conflict really ruined their community.
D3 Mental anguish.
Conflict causes devastation that pushes Boyi’s mother to a state of insanity. The narrator finds the mother seated alone on a kiti moto in the kitchen. She neither looks up nor respond to greetings. She screams at the narrator to leave some tea for Boyi who will return from the caves hungry. The screaming goes on for weeks ‘stupid girl you want to finish tea for your brother and he will come from the caves hungry’, she bawls. She would sit stunned gazing at the wall declaring she envisions her son returning home after escaping from the snare of the militia. After her monologues, she would sit sadly and silently. When her madness takes a walk they would brew tea together with the narrator and would nostalgically reminisce stories about Boyi; about how he saved her marriage being a testament that her womb was not tied by Djinis. Conflict drives Baba to partake in strange tradition of burying a banana stem to drive the spirit of death away and appease Boyi’s spirit. The narrator is surprised by her father turning his back on religion. The mother refuses to be part of the ritual of sending her son’s spirit away. She has lost touch with reality and lives in denial. Boyi’s family was traumatized by the militia.
D4 Misery
In her anguish, Mama is too despondent to eat. She sits muttering to herself without touching her ugali until it would form a brown crust. The narrator would take it and throw it away in the chicken coop. She sits and talks to herself for hours on end lamenting about her suffering. She asks God to tie a rope around her stomach. Boyi’s family was devasted that he had been recruited by the militia by force.
D5 Work disruption
Conflict disrupts work in the village. That December the farmers do not clear their farms for the second planting of maize. The militia steals young crops from the fields and goats from pens. Instead of working, men and women sit and exchange dreadful tales of the horrendous cruelty of the militia. The militia cut people and throw their bodies in rivers, pit latrines and wells. They recruit boys as young as ten years who are forced to kill their own relatives. Instead of protecting the land, the militia goes on an indiscriminate killing spreeand their kins are victims of the aggression instead of beneficiaries. Boyi’s sister has a terrible dream that her brother attacks her and chops her head off into small pieces. She is traumatized by this dream.
D6 Dehumanisation
As result of war, innocent children turn into savages. These young boys are forced to murder or rape their own kinsmen. Boyi has gone from a God fearing young man to a wanted criminal. Chesaina tells his parents that he is now a marked man. The distressing news crashes Boyi’s parents and reduces oth of them to tears. They cannot wrap their heads around the fact that their good son who recited Psalms devotedly is now Matwakei’s right hand man and an enemy of the state. War truly ruins families.
D7 Killings
Boyi’s family is devastated by the news of his killing. The nation newspaper headlines screams coldly ‘Ragtag militia leaders killed by Army Forces’ Baba crumples like an old coat due to shock. Mama is too stunned to cry. She simply laughs. Boyi’s sister is too gutted to cry. War has robbed them of their kin in the prime of his youth. Boyi is murdered brutally after being flung out of a helicopter which was mid air. There was no body to bury or for Mama to slap for that matter. She does not roll on the ground as is custom. She is neither bitter nor sad. She only has eyes of lunacy and a voice of death. She truly is devastated. She sits on Boyi’s bed together with the daughter who weeps uncontrollably, her tears soaking her clothes. Boyi’s family was deeply destroyed by the war.
CONCLUSION(2 MKS)
It is evident that conflict or crisis has no positive outcome. It instead destroys families and communities and should therefore be shunned.
AWARD 2:3:3:3:3:2 + 4mks language= 20mks - The Play ‘Inheritance’ by David Mulwa
‘The White Man is still in control of African States long after hard fought African independence’ Write an essay in support of this statement basing your illustrations on the Play ‘Inheritance’ By David Mulwa. 20mks
INTRODUCTION (2MKS)
African States are still manipulated by White men many years later since they declared themselves democractic. This is clearly illustrated in the play through the following situations experienced by the natives of Kutula colony.( Accept any other relevant introduction)
CONTENT 12mks
C1 Financial Exploitation
The Whites like Golstein and Robert loan Lacuna money so as to improve the economy of his people ‘ a lot of money has been advanced to bolster your economy and better your people’s lives after your father ran the Kutula Kingdom into shambles’ pg 64 At first, they treat Lacuna respectfully, ‘Your excellency’ Lacuna misappropriates the loan by living a lavish lifestyle, buys himself a personal jet, shares part of the money with his ministers and banks some of it in his personal accounts in the same bank that loaned him the money. Lacuna fails to account for the money advanced to him, he entices the Whites with the fertile lands of Bukelenge valley so that he is given more money. Such a request only brings more dictatorship by the Whites who demand that the natives be evacuated and they give Lacuna no choice. He makes a declaration that the valley must be evacuated in two weks time. This move definitely would leave the natives homeless. The treat Lacuna with so much contempt and reduce him to beggar pleading on his knees but his pleas fall on deaf ears as Robert and Goldstein refused totally because Lacuna had no money to repay the loan and they were now fully in control.
C2 Governor Macay’s Rule
Governor Macay rules Kutula Kingdom on behalf of the King. King Kutula XV tells him that he infact governs his people as his subjects yet Kutula belongs to the natives and not them the Whites. King Kutula reminds Macay that their forefathers welcomed the Whites by signing a treaty thinking it was an agreement between equals. They had given them shelter only for the Whites to take over Kutula as if they belonged. He tells him that the natives have become restless and that is why they were molesting their women and children. King Kutula bravely asserts that the Whites must leave Kutula or they treat the natives as equals by teaching them how do the mining themselves. He openly tells Macay that the natives are capable of learning to become civilized and run their affairs independently without the interference of the Whites. Macay has the full support of Bishop Menninger who is equally cunning despite being a man of God. Menninger plan to manipulate the natives using religion. He requests the King to give him Sangoi whom he plans to teach everything about Western culture and later release her to the women folk to confuse them. Both Macay and Menniger are aware of Lacuna’s insatiable greed for power and money and would do anything they request and eventually they would use him to take over the colony totally because King Kutula was not easily manipulated.
C3 Political control
Governor Macay and Bishop Menninger take advantage of Lacuna’s greed for power and wealth and propose to him the idea of killing his father the King. They wanted to get rid of King Kutula because he had raised concern of the fat that the Whites had become too comfortable in Kutula such that Macay was treating the natives like slaves. Macay was very angry because the whip had been abolished. According to him the natives cannot work without being beaten. During the meeting which Macay had surmoned King Kutula because the natives were molesting their women and children he becomes disrepectfull to the King claiming that he can have him jailed because of supporting the uprising.Menninger had to intervene and remind Macay that he was talking to the king and he deserved more respect. Lacuna falls into the trap and poisons his father’s tea he traditionally inherits the throne even though King Kutula was grooming Sangoi to rule after him because he had noted that she had leadership qualities. As promised Lacuna is loaned a lot of money 120 Billion which he squanders by living a lavish lifestyle and banking some in his personal accounts. The Whites had now achieved their objective of taking charge of Kutula since Lacuna had no way of paying back the money. He had only bought one machine which was not functioning, gold and silver mining was below the expected production whole coffee was also not making profit as expected. Conditions were now dictated upon Lacuna and the natives, the natives were to work more to quadruple the producton of gold and silver this was automatic exploitation as fewer workers were retained for a lot of work. Robert demanded that the natives be evacuated from the Bukelenge valley which was very fertile lands. His intention was to irrigate those lands for agriculture. Lacuna who was completely helpless had to accept those terms and conditions because he couldn’t pay up given that his accounts were frozen and all money taken by Robert. The Whites were now calling the shots on how Kutula should be run they even suggested that Lacuna should privatize public corporations, tax every business that is seen to make an inkling of profit and also fire almost everyone retaining only a few workers to reduce wage paid. All this conditions only fuelled more protests from the natives and more uprisings were experienced in rebellion which obviously made Lacuna realize that he was unpopular to the natives.
C4 Direct White Manipulations
Lacuna finds himself in a desperate situation as he could not pay back what he owed the Whites he tries pleading with Robert but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Robert had already made his own investigation within the colony and was aware that the natives were against their own leader. Lacuna had ruled with an iron fist and had already become unpopular. Robert decides that he will no longer have Lacuna as the middle man but deal with the natives directly. He wanted them to have a fair playing ground as far as business was concerned. The natives were to work double hours until they pay up for what Lacuna owed the Whites. If the debts remain unpaid in the adults life time then their children will end up paying in future till all the debt is recovered.
CONCLUSION (2mks)
Lacuna’s people are not free in their own land. Though guards and guns are in plenty his people are not guaranteed neither security nor food. There is high dependency on the Whites hence it is appropriate to conclude that the White man is in charge in Kutula colony despite being independent. ( allow any other relevant introduction)
