- Exfoliation dome is formed in places experiencing large diurnal temperature range. Like arid areas.
- A large homogenous rock is exposed to alternate expansion and contraction of the outer layer.
- Because rocks are poor conductors of heat, there is little or no heat is transmitted to the inner layers.
- This causes strain to result between the outer layer and inner layers and with time the outer layer developes cracks and peels out.
- The peeled off materials are rolled away leaving behind a smooth dome shaped rock called exfoliation dome.
-Example: Along Mombasa Nairobi highway between mtito Andei and Voi.
