UVB Exposure: Sunlight contains ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, which is a type of ultraviolet light. When your skin is exposed to UVB rays from the sun, a specific form of cholesterol in your skin cells called 7-dehydrocholesterol is converted into cholecalciferol, also known as vitamin D3.
Vitamin D Activation: Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is not active in its current form. To become biologically active, it needs to undergo two enzymatic conversions. The first conversion occurs in the liver, where vitamin D3 is converted into 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcidiol). This is the major circulating form of vitamin D in the bloodstream.
Kidney Conversion: The second conversion takes place in the kidneys. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D is converted into its biologically active form, called 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol). Calcitriol is a hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating calcium and phosphorus absorption in the intestines.
Calcium Absorption: Calcitriol increases the absorption of calcium from the intestines into the bloodstream. Calcium is an essential mineral for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. Without adequate calcium absorption, bones can become weak and brittle, and teeth may not develop properly.
Bone Health: Calcium is a major component of the mineral matrix in bones, making them strong and rigid. Adequate levels of vitamin D ensure that your body can absorb enough calcium to support bone health. In addition to calcium, vitamin D also helps regulate other minerals like phosphorus, which are important for bone development.
Teeth Development: Just as with bones, calcium is essential for the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth. Adequate vitamin D levels ensure that your body can absorb calcium efficiently for dental health.
