At this moment the windows of the cottage shook violently at the loud report of a cannon that appeared almost close to the cliff. All sprains to their feet, and looking through the window saw a rocket whizzing high in the air. As Andrew and Seth rushed out to the terrance a fearful sight presented. Brightly illumined by a blue light revenues cutter lay fixed on the iron rack. A wave rolled completely over her, and at once extinguished the light, at the same moment a tremendous crash was heard as her mast fell over the side.
Without loss of time Andrew and Seth had seized two coils of rope from the cottage stores and were making their way along the cliff to the projecting point at the right entrance to the bay.
Before long the mast, with six men clinging to it was washed against the cliff exactly below the point. But by the time Andrew and
Seth arrived only one remained alive, a Negro of about fourteen, whom they rescued by means of ropes.
The three now cautiously picked their way among loose stones on the dangerous paths and soon arrived at the cottage, where the Negro boy was made comfortable and fed and was soon fast asleep upon some clean straw in the kitchen.
