MARKING SCHEME

  1.  
    1. Discuss the importance of the Holy Quran to Muslims.
      1. It is the first source of Islamic sharia. It contains all solutions to man’s problems in all aspects of life e.g political, spiritual, social, economic, religious etc
      2. It provides guidance to all those who want to discover the truth and reality about life on earth and in the hereafter
      3. It preserves the messages of the previous scripture which were corrupted and distorted
      4. It is a source of thawab for those who recite it. The recite gets ten rewards for every letter he/she reads.
      5. It is a source of knowledge on different areas e.g scientific knowledge where it talks about embryonic development.
      6. Students get wise when they start reading the Qur’an in their childhood, thus Holy Book is the best intellectual treasure a student can have.
      7. Quran recitation inculcates love and fear of Allah. This is because some verses of the
        Quran contain soothing effect while others contain harsh tone to the disbelievers and the evil doers.
      8. It cultivates love and respect for the Prophet (SAW) to whom the Qur’an was revealed.
      9. It contains narratives of peoples and nations of the past and prophets.
      10. It helps to improve Arabic and services as an incentive for the study of Arabic      (5 x 2 = 10mks)
    2. State five attributes of Allah mentioned in Ayatul Qursy (5mks)
      1. Allah is the only one.
      2. All knowing
      3. Self- sustaining
      4. Allah needs no helper
      5. The owner of the heavens and the earth
      6. Allah Never gets tired
      7. The eternal
      8. He is the supreme
      9. Allah never sleeps nor slumbers
      10. The wise and the powerful.     (5x 1 = 5mks)
    3. Differentiate between Quran and Hadith.
      1. Qur’an is the Word of Allah sent down upon Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) through Angel Jibril while Hadith is the report about the acts, sayings and confirmations of Prophet Muhammad.
      2. Quran is the first source of Shariah Hadith is the second source of Shariah
      3. The Quran has no categories because the meaning and wording are all from Allah while Hadith is categorized as hadith Qudsi and HadithNabawi.
      4. The Quran speaks in general terms and contain general principles while hadith is analytical as it explains the Quran.
      5. Reading of the Quran is an act of worship and the reader is rewarded while only application and teaching of Hadith is rewarded.
      6. Quran is recited in daily prayers while Hadith is not recited in prayers; instead it is applied in our lives.
      7. Cleanliness (twahara) is a primary requisite for reciting the Quran while Hadith can be recited in any state.
      8. Quran is authentic as it was written and recited in its original form from the time of the Prophet while Hadith are classified according to their degree of authenticity.
      9. Muslims are commanded to listen to the Quran when it is being recited while it is not a necessity to listen to hadith being recited.
      10. The Quran is memorized and recited in its original form/words while the words and sentences of Hadith may vary depending on the reporters.
      11. When quoting the Quran it must be done exactly (direct quotation) while when quoting the Hadith one is allowed to paraphrase.                         (5x 1 = 5mks)

    1. State the qualities one should possess to be a Muhaddith.
      1. Thorough knowledge of the Qur’an
      2. Ability to differentiate between sound and weak hadith
      3. Should be of unquestionable character/high integrity
      4. Should be of sound memory
      5. Should have enough knowledge of Hadith and the scholars of Hadith.
      6. Should have knowledge of biographies of hadith narrators
      7. Should know the biography of the prophet.       (5x 1 = 5mks)
    2. State five privileges accorded to a Muslim traveler.
      1. Shortening prayers
      2. Combining prayers
      3. Pushing or pulling forward prayers
      4. Exemption from performing Jumaa prayers
      5. Exemption from performing Jamaa prayers.
      6. Breaking sawm.
      7. Eating haram food when need arise.
      8. To be given zakat in case they face difficulties
      9. To be hosted by other Muslims       (5x 1 = 5mks)
    3. Explain five benefits of swalah on a Muslim.
      1. It makes a believer to constantly remember Allah given that one has to pray five times a day.
      2. If properly observed swalat safe guards a Muslim from committing sins and evil deeds.
      3. It makes a Muslim acquire a sense of punctuality and obedience in life.
      4. It distinguishes Muslim from a non-Muslim
      5. It enables a Muslim to fulfill a fundamental pillar of Islam hence earning rewards.
      6. It helps a Muslim to maintain a high level of personal hygiene and cleanliness.
      7. When observed in congregation prayers inculcate a sense of brotherhood social solidarity and belonging among Muslims.
      8. It demonstrates ones loyalty and steadfastness in Allah.      (5x 2 = 10mks)

    2. Discuss the importance of Islamic morality.
      1. Islamic morality makes a Muslim to have a sound mind and body and a peaceful soul.
      2. It makes a Muslim have a distinctive Islamic personality when interacting with others.
      3. Islamic morality cultivates in a Muslim the best character in the most whole some manner.
      4. It strengthens the bonds between human beings and Allah thus developing a strong taqwa.
      5. Islamic morality guards the Muslims external behaviors and his manifest deeds to be in line with Allah (S.W.T) the teachings of Islam.
      6. It shields a Muslims from evil since it guards his external behavior and his manifest deeds to be in line with Allah(S.W.T)
      7. It promotes positive thinking by guiding individual Muslims to be occupied with constructive ideas and serious pursuits of how to lead a positive life on this earth and the hereafter.
      8. It discourages a Muslim from practicing prohibitions such as use of intoxicants.
      9. \It promotes peace and harmony in the society in that the prohibitions discourage vices.
      10. \It generates affection and respect between the members of the family and the society in general hence promoting brotherhood.
      11. Allah has promised rewards for those who abide by the Islamic morals and avoid evils deeds.      (5x 2 = 10mks)
    3. Identify five types of sexual perversion (5mks)
      1. Fornication,
      2. Adultery
      3. Gayism
      4. Lesbianism
      5. Rape
      6. Incest
      7. Bestiality
      8. Masturbation      (5x 1 = 5mks)
  4.  
    1. Elaborate five conditions to be fulfilled before a marriage is considered valid in Islam.
      1. Both parties (bride and bridegroom) must give their consent
      2. The parties must be of sound mind and mature
      3. The guardians must also consent to the marriage
      4. There must be reliable witnesses when the marriage is taking place dowry must be given to the girl’
      5. The marriage must not be between two people who are forbidden by sharia to get married.     (5x 1 = 5mks)
    2. Explain four types of divorce in Islam
      1. Mubarat – It’s the divorce mutually agreed by the husband and wife. Talaqa by mutual consent.
      2. Khul’a – Divorce sought by the wife.
      3. Talaqa by the husband – This is sought by the husband for different reasons from the wife e.g. rudeness, negligence of duties etc.
      4. Faskh – Divorce by the Kadhis court.
      5. Dhihaar – It’s a situation in which the husband tells his wife that she is like the backside of her mother  (4x 2 = 8mks)
    3. List the accusations which were leveled against Caliph Uthman.
      • That was extravagant. He squandered money from baitul maal by giving away money to his relatives
      • That he burnt the holy Qur’an.
      • That he was levying zakat on horses yet the prophet never did the same
      • That he spent zakat fund on warfare.
      • That he allowed his clansmen of banu umayya to graze their animals on state pastures
      • That he made innovations in Islam. He made full prayers at Arafat and Mina though the prophet had shortened them
      • He was accused of calling back his uncle Hakam bin As to Madina after 17 years who was exiled by the holy prophet.
      • He was accused for mistreating the prophet’s companions e.g Abu Dharr
      • He was criticized because he expanded the prophet’s mosque and that in Makkah. The owners of the houses that were demolished during the expansions refused the compensations and raised great outcry against it.

  5.  
    1. Describe five roles of the City States in the spread of Islam along the East African Coast.
      1. The Swahili/ Islamic civilization and culture of the city states attracted inhabitants from the neighboring communities who embraced Islam.
      2. Muslim inhabitants of the city states intermarried with the local people who converted to Islam upon marriage.
      3. The Mosques and Madrassas in the city states also attracted the local people to convert to Islam.
      4. Through trade with the Muslim inhabitants of the city states, local people came into contact with Islam and eventually ended up embracing the religion.
      5. Local people left their homes to seek employment in the city states as domestic workers, in business and in plantations. These workers eventually embraced Islam.
      6. Local people, who left their rural homes, occasionally visited their relatives and took Islam with them to the villages.
      7. In the 19th century (during the rule of Sayyid Said bin Sultan) Muslim traders began to travel, to the mainland of East African to obtain goods and bring them to the city states. These trades come into contact with the inland tribes to whom they propagated Islam.
      8. Some of those traders who went to the mainland stayed in the trading centers where they were trading with the local people resulting in the establishment of Muslim centers such as Taveta, Ujiji, Tabora, Mumias and Buganda.
      9. The city states were ruled by Muslims rulers/ sultans who extended their authority beyond the city states to the neighboring local communities who not only came to accept the rule of their Muslim rulers but Islam as well.
      10. Those Muslim centers in the mainland became important in propagating Islam to the surrounding areas.

    2. Identify the contributions of Sheikh Al Amin Mazrui in promoting education among Muslims in Kenya.
      1. He was one of the first generation of graduates in Islam. He became a role model for the younger Muslims to emulate.
      2. He was one of the pioneer reformers of Islam in East Africa. He believed one one way of bringing reform was through education
      3. He taught against retrogressive and unislamic practices such as use of talisman.
      4. He founded and published newspapers through which he advocated education for Muslims
      5. He wrote books and articles in which he focused on the of education to the Muslim communities
      6. He emphasized the importance of Arabic as a tool in learning Islam
      7. He championed for the teaching of Islamic religious education and Arabic in secondary schools
      8. He supported and advocated for the education of women
      9. He established Islamic learning centers and madrassas for Muslim children
      10. He authored several works in Arabic and Kiswahili. E.g Masomo ya Dini
      11. He advocated for the employment of IRE teachers and for them to be paid by the government.
      12. He served as a kadhi of Mombasa and later a chief Kadhi of Kenya
      13. He began translating the Qur’an in Kiswahili but died before completing the work     (5x 1 = 5mks)
    3. Outline the achievements of Sheikh Hassan Al-Banna.
      1. Contribution to the development of Sufism by becoming a Sufi himself.
      2. He was constantly opposed to the Muhtazilities and Shia belief as they were misleading.
      3. Encouraged Muslims to follow the Islamic culture.
      4. He was a scholar of fiqh, philosophy, science and logic and was a professor of Islamic theology.
      5. People sought for his advice on matters of religion because of his vast knowledge.
      6. Through his views and reforms he tried to change the bad conditions of the society through Islam.
      7. He strongly discouraged Muslims from imitating the west with its materials ideology which separates religion from the state.
      8. He encouraged Muslims brotherhood and following of the Quran and hadith so as to establish an Islamic system of government.
      9. Advocated for total rejections of the west and denounced Muslim intellectuals of the government for their dependence on the west.
      10. Advocated for reform and modernization through Islamic principles and values.
      11. Emphasized on unity of Muslims.
      12. Produced many publications on social, religious and political issues affecting Muslims e.g. a daily paper known as ‘Ikhwan-ul-Muslimun’ a booklet “what is our message?”
      13. Dedicated himself to being a counselor and teachers to adults and children to teach them the objectives of religion and sources of their wellbeing and happiness in life.
      14. Used the mass media to serve Islam and created awareness among Muslims.                (5x 1 = 5mks)
