Requirements for candidates
In addition to the apparatus and fittings found in a Chemistry laboratory, each candidate will require the following.
- Exactly 4.5g of solid A
- About 100cm3 of solution B
- One burette 0 – 50ml
- One pipette 25ml
- Two conical flasks 250ml
- Thermometer
- 100ml measuring cylinder
- About 1g of solid E
- About 1g of solid F
- Phenolphthalein indicator
- Universal indicator solution
- PH Chart (1-14 range)
- About 500ml of distilled water in a wash bottle
- 5 dry test tubes
- 1 Boiling tube
- Clean Metallic spatula
- Blue and red litmus papers
- About 0.5g sodium hydrogen carbonate solid
Each candidate should have access to:
- Source of heat
- 2M sodium hydroxide supplied with a dropper
- 2M ammonium hydroxide supplied with a dropper
- 2M HCl acid supplied with a dropper
- Lead (II) nitrate supplied with a dropper
- Acidified potassium manganate (VII) supplied with a dropper
- 5M Barium chloride supplied with a dropper
NOTES
- Solid A is 4.5g of oxalic acid weighed accurately and stoppered.
- Solid E is Ammonium aluminium sulphate
- Solid F is maleic acid.
- Solution B is 0.4M NaOH.
