  1. You are the chairperson of the Umoja High School Drama Club. Recently your club  participated in the national drama festivals and emerged the best. The school has decided  to throw the club a party and you have been asked to invite a guest to grace the occasion.  As a club, you decide to invite the Director of Culture at the county government. Since he  has been recently appointed, he is not very familiar with the location of your school. 

    Write to him or her a letter of invitation to attend the occasion. In your letter include brief  directions to your school. Your letter must go through the Principal of your school.

    6. Your friend Martin is to give directions to your school during the Thanksgiving ceremony. He  comes to you to advise him on how to give directions. Advise him on the three things he should  avoid doing while giving directions. (3 marks)
    7. Read the following conversation between Michael and the Secretary of Uzalendo School and  answer the questions that follow.
      Michael:     Hello.
      Secretary:  Hello. Who are you?
      Michael:     I am Michael Wanyama. Is that Uzalendo College?
      Secretary:  Yes. What do you want?
      Michael:     I would like to talk to the Pri…
      Secretary:  The Principal is not in.
      Michael:     I wanted to inquire whether there is more room for admission to your school Secretary: There is no room for more students.
      Michael:     Could you kindly tell me about the next intake?
      Secretary:  I don’t know. You will see the advert in the newspapers. (hangs up)
      1. Identify the shortcomings in the secretary’s responses. (3 marks)
      2. Identify three responses of the secretary and correct them to ensure that they adhere to  telephone etiquette. (3 marks)

      • I would demonstrate the act of flying by moving arms up and down as I use a falling intonation in both cases as they are statements.
  2. Provide a pair of words with the following silent letters. (3 marks)

  5. Imagine you are a radio presenter of a popular education show. You are to interview a prominent author of a set text that is to be examined this year.
    1. State three things you will do during preparation to make the interview a success. (3 marks)
      • I would book an appointment with the author.
      • I would run an advert of the show so as to reach a large audience.
      • I would come up with the questions so as to ask so to stick to the topic of discussion.
      • I would ensure everything is in order and functioning to avoid inconveniences during the show.
      • I would ensure I get a copy of the book and read beforehand to be informed. I would arrive early for the interview.
      • I would ensure am well groomed.
    2. How would you conduct yourself during the interview? (2 marks)
      • I would be audible enough to be comfortably heard by both the interviewee and the listeners.
      • I would employ appropriate tonal variation when asking questions to be interesting as listening to one tone is boring.
      • I would stick to the time allocated for the show to avoid inconveniencing the other radio programs.
      • I would ask open ended questions to allow the interviewee to fully express themselves.
      • I would speak less and listen more to allow the speaker to fully express themselves. I would take down notes of the important details or facts the author gives during the interview as relying on the memory can be disastrous.
      • I would maintain a meaningful eye contact with the interviewee to make them feel comfortable and at ease.
      • I would give a brief introduction of the interviewee to the listeners to make him or her comfortable or at ease and also create a good rapport with the interviewee.
  6. Your friend Martin is to give directions to your school during the Thanksgiving ceremony. He comes to you to advise him on how to give directions. Advise him on the three things he should avoid doing while giving directions. (3 marks)
    • He should avoid giving options.
    • He should avoid starting from unfamiliar starting point.
    • He should avoid using complicated language when giving directions.
    • He should avoid using too many words when giving directions.
    • He should avoid mixing up the steps but rather do it in a systematic manner.
  7. Read the following conversation between Michael and the Secretary of Uzalendo School and answer the questions that follow.
    Michael: Hello.
    Secretary: Hello. Who are you?

      • The secretary receives the call unprofessionally/ rudely/impolitely. “who are you?” She dismisses Michael. “There is no room for more students.”
      • She fails to introduce herself. “Hello who are you?”
      • She hangs up before the end of the conversation. “I don’t know. You will see the advert in the newspapers. (hangs up)
      • She assumes the role of the Principal by giving categorical answers. “There is no room for more students.”
        Award any other relevant response. The candidate must illustrate their responses.
    2. Identify three responses of the secretary and correct them to ensure that they adhere to telephone etiquette. (3 marks)
      • Hello, who are you- Hello, may I know whom am talking to/ speaking to. The principal is not in- I am sorry the Principal is not in. would you mind leaving a message.
      • What do you want? - How can I help you?
      • I don’t know. - I’m sorry/ I am afraid I don’t have the details now.
        There is no room for more students- I am afraid/ I am sorry this year’s intake is closed, however, the next intake will be advertised soon.
