GIRL'S SKIRT

  • A pattern of a girl's skirt is provided You are advised to study the sketches, instructions and layout carefully before you begin the test

MATERIALS PROVIDE

  1. Pattern Pieces
    1. Skirt back
    2. Upper skirt front
    3. Lower skirt front
    4. Waistband
    5. Pocket
  2. Plain lightweight cotton fabric 60cm long and 90 cm wide.
  3. Sewing thread to match the fabric
  4. One large envelope.

THE TEST

  • Using the materials provided, lay, cut and make the LEFT HALF of the SKIRT to show the following processes:
    1. Cutting out (12 marks)
    2. Making the dart at the back skirt (6 marks)
    3. Preparing and attaching the pocket on the upper skirt front. (Do not turn the lower seam allowance of the pocket. Stitch pocket sides only.) (9 marks)
    4. Preparing knife pleats on the lower skirt front. (12 marks)
    5. Joining the upper skirt front to the lower skirt front using an overlaid seam. Neaten one third of the overlaid seam using loop stitches. (12 marks)
    6. Making the skirt side seam using an open seam (12 marks)
    7. Preparing and attaching the waistband. (Do not trim the seam allowance.) Top stitch the waistband edge. Hold the waistband in place using tacking stitches and finish half of the back piece using hemming stitches. (Do not remove the tacking stitches.) (20 marks)
    8. OMIT The management of the skirt hem.
    9. Overall presentation.(6½ marks)
  • At the end of the examination, firmly sew onto your work, on a single fabric, a label bearing your name and index number. Remove the needle, pins and loose threads from your work. Fold your work neatly and place it in the envelope provided. Do not put scraps of fabric in the envelope. Do not seal the envelope.

PRESENTATION

  1. Work well pressed (1) and folded (½).
  2. Label (½) firmly sewn (1) without concealing details (½) and on a single fabric (½).
  3. Pins/needles (½) unnecessary tacking threads (½) and loose threads (½) removed.
  4. Made up for the left half (1).
    Sub-total (6 ½)

CUTTING OUT

  1. All six pieces cut-out (6 x ½).
  2. Smooth cutting of the upper skirt front (1) and on straight grain (½)
  3. Smooth cutting of the skirt back (1) and on straight grain (½)
  4. Smooth cutting of the lower skirt front (1) and on straight grain (2)
  5. Smooth cutting of the lower skirt back (1) and on straight grain (2)
  6. Cutting of the waist band (1) on straight grain (1 x 2)
  7. Cutting of waistband (½ x 2)
  8. Smooth cutting of pocket (1) and on straight grain (½)
    Sub-total (13 ½)

WAIST DART

  1. Straight stitchery (1) and tapering to nothing (½)
  2. Correct length of dart 8.2 cm to within 2mm (8.0 to 8.4cm) (1)
  3. Correct width of dart lcm to within 2mm (0.8 to 1.2cm) (1)
  4. Dart pressed towards center back (CB) (1)
  5. Dart flat on RS (½) and on WS (½)
  6. Dart secured at the point (1)
    Sub-total 9

PATCH POCKET

  1. Correct turning of hem (1) of pocket mouth (6mm turning)
  2. Hem finished with machine stitching (1) only.
  3. Straight stitchery of pocket sides and close to the fold (2 x 1)
  4. Pocket correctly reinforced at mouth (½ x 2)
  5. Pocket correct width 7cm to within 2mm (6.8 to 7.2cm]
  6. Correct pocket length (1) 8cm to within 2mm (7.8 to 8.2cm) 
  7. Pocket seam allowance well tucked under the overlaid seam(1) 
  8. Pocket flat (1)
    Sub-total 9

KNIFE PLEATS (if not knife award zero (0)

  1. Pleats pressed towards the side seam (3 x ½)
  2. Pleats made on three layers of fabric each (3 x ½)
  3. Correct number of pleats (three pleats) 3 x 1
  4. Pleats well pressed (1) Even (1) and flat (1) at the overlaid seam (3 x 1)
  5. Correct width of pleats 2cm to within 2mm (1.8 to 2.2cm) (3 x 1)

OVERLAID SEAM (if not overlaid award zero (0)

  1. Upper skirt front placed on the seam (1) on RS. (1) of lower skirt with raw edges well tucked under (1)
  2. Straight stitchery (1) and close to the fold (1)
  3. Correct width of trimmed seam (1) lem to within 2mm (0.8 to | 1.2cm) and even (½)
  4. Upper skirt and lower skirt flash at the side scam and CF (1)
  5. Loop stitches made on one third of seam length (1)
  6. Stitches even in length (1) and evenly (1) distributed
  7. Stitches made on trimmed edge (1)
    Sub-total 11½

OPEN SEAM (if not open seam, award zero (0)

  1. Straight stitchery of seam (2)
  2. Scam well neatened (1 x 2)
  3. Correct width of seam each side 1cm to within 2mm (0.8 to 1.2cm) (2 x 1)
  4. Evenness of seam (1 x 2)
  5. Seam pressed open (1) and flat (1) at the waist band.
    Sub-total 10

WAIST BAND

  1. Waist band edge made with straight stitchery (1) and seam allowance
  2. See through the light evenly trimmed (1)
  3. Waist band well knife-edged (1)
  4. CB end well-finished (½) with straight stitchery (½) and a pointed corner (½)
  5. Waistband attached with straight (1) stitchery and edge tops stitched (1) and seam not trimmed (1) (see through light)
  6. Raw edges well tucked under on W.S. (1) and waist band held down with straight tacking stitches (1)
  7. Half of the back waistband finished with hemming stitches (2) and tacking stitches not removed (½)
  8. Evenness of width of waistband on RS (1) and W.S (1)
  9. Correct width of waistband 3cm to within 2mm (2.8cm to 3.2cm) (1 x2)
  10. Flatness of waistband WS (1) and RS (1)
  11. C.B seam allowance turned (1) and flash (1) with CB of waistband
  12. CF of skirt flash with CF of waistband (1) to within 2mm
