GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS - The minimum mark will be 01 and maximum mark will be 10
- If an examiner is not sure of what to award a script, the guidance of TI. and the ACE or the DCE should be sought.
- If there is suspicion that a candidate has created in any way, the script should be referred to the TL immediately, and if necessary to the ACE or DCE
MARKING CRITERIA - The composition will be assessed according to the scheme given below.
- Examiners should not hesitate to use the full range of marks.
- The Kenyan Sign Language composition is intended to test the accuracy of candidate's ability to communicate in glossed writing,
- Communication is established at different levels of accuracy, fluency, originality, organization and relevancy to the subject topic.
- Accuracy
- Look out for correct tense used and agreement of verbs as used in KSL
- Accurate use of vocabulary
- Correct spelling
- Correct KSL punctuation.
- Fluency
- Correct word order such as O+V+S+V+OIS.
- Correct sentence structure and paragraphing.
- Ideas developed in a logical sequence.
- Originality/ creativity
- The use of KSL in an interesting manner.
- Humour
- Organization and relevance of content
- Connecting ideas and paragraphs logically
- Writing within topic given.
- Accuracy
- MARKING
Examiners must underline the errors they identity, as this has direct bearing on the scoring. Ensure you award merit with a tick either above the word or phrase or in the margin for the whole sentence. - GROSS ERRORS
- All error of agreement
- Errors of spelling
- Errors in KSL. in punctuation causing serious lack of communication Le wrong use of pause/or
- Serious tense errors
- Errors of sentence construction.
- IRRELEVANCE
If a composition:- Deviates from the topic
- Is totally different with a clumsy attempt to connect
- Is memorized or pro- propared
- Is deemed irrelevant
Such a script must be confirmed by the TL, DCEnd ACH and a when consensus is reached, penalized very heavily.
- AWARDING MARKS
GROUP1:01-02 Scripts (poor)- The candidate does not communicate & their language ability is so minimal that the examiner has to guess a lot as to what they intended to write.
- The subject is distorted
- KSL punctuation use is very poor or absent
- There are hardly any correct sentences
- There are all kinds of errors (e.g., spelling, tenses)
GROUP 2: 03-05 Scripts (fair)
These candidates communication understandably but only relatively so: - Lack of confidence in language use
- Very simple sentences
- Organization is weak and flow is jerky
- A lot of English interference into KSL structures
ie. Preposition use as in English
English tense markers-('ex-ed-ing) - The story is often undeveloped
- The script is clear but flat and uncertain
GROUP 3: 06-08 Scripts (GOOD)
These scripts are characterized by greater fluency and case of expression - Candidates demonstrates ability to use KSL. as a normal way of expression
- Sentences are well constructed
- An attempt at humor and suspense is noted
GROUP 4: 09-10 scripts (EXCELLENT)
This candidate communicates fluently and attractively with originality and efficiency - The candidate makes us share their deep feelings, emotions and enthusiasm
- Expression is free and without constraint
- Evidence of maturity, good planning and sore humor
- Many items of merit: Indicators of complete command of the language
- Clever arrangement and delight of expression
- Good knowledge and use of vocabulary expected of the theme
