  1. Imaginative composition. (Compulsory) (20 marks)
    Either
    1. Write a composition ending with the following words.
      ………………then I realized that it is good and noble to trust my parents.
    2. The ravaging drought in the country is increasingly making life difficult. Write a composition on the measures that can be taken to mitigate such an adversity in future.
  2. Compulsory set text. (20 marks)
    H.R Ole Kulet, Blossom of the Savannah.
    The strong bond between Resian and Taiyo contributes significantly to the triumph. Write an essay in support of the statement drawing illustrations from Blossoms of the Savannah by Henry Ole Kulet.
  3. Optional Set Text. (20 marks)
    The Short Story:
    Godwin Siundu: A Silent Song and other stories.
    Drawing illustrations from the story ‘A Silent Song’ by Leonard Kibera, write an essay demonstrating the plight of people living with disability.

MARKING SCHEME

  1. Imaginative composition. (Compulsory)
    Either
    1. Write a composition ending with the following words.
      ………………then I realized that it is good and noble to trust my parents.
      • Must be a story if not deduct up to 04 AD
      • The story must end with the given words if not deduct 02 AD.
      • The candidate must show an understanding of the statement and detail events that occurred to arouse a deep sense of remorse that failure to heed to the parents advice has cost him or her/ detail events that occur to arouse a deep sense of pride/ achievement/ success as a result of heeding to the parents advice. If not deduct 4 AD
      • Read through the composition, establish the level of communication by determining its class then award the mark commensurate with the class of the composition.

        Or
    2. The ravaging drought in the country is increasingly making life difficult. Write a composition on the measures that can be taken to mitigate such an adversity in future.
      • Must be an essay that illustrates ways that can be used to curb drought. If not treat it as irrelevant, and deduct 2 AD for irrelevance.
      • Deduct 2 marks if length is more than 2 A4 pages.
      • Some points to consider for discussion include: conservation of water catchment areas, Development of strategic water sources e.g. dams, boreholes etc., planting drought tolerant crops that can withstand insufficient rainfall so that there is something to fall back on when drought strikes, Responsive drought warning systems.
      • It is the linguistic ability of the candidate that counts not the number of points raised by the candidate.
      • Read through the composition, establish the level of communication by determining its class then award the mark commensurate with the class of the composition.

    INTRODUCTION.
    In BOTS no man is an island. Human beings were created to relate mutually. The close friendship between Resian and Taiyo is the key to overcoming stormy times that present themselves in their lives.

    POINTS OF INTERPRETATION.
    Intrusion of privacy

    In their new environment at Nasila, the girls meet unique challenges. They are not used to the communal life for all along they have stayed in an urban set up where life is individualistic. At Nasila, they have to get used to impromptu visitors and superior male counterparts like Olarinkoi . It is the love between the two girls that helps in these scenarios p67,68,69. The duo stay together most of the times. By so doing, they share a lot Taiyo counsels Resian on using kind language on Yeiyo Botorr her aunt. The two girls discuss about danger that lurks from the hostile youth especially because of their uncircumcised condition. P76,77

    Unity against FGM
    In overcoming the challenge of female genital mutilation (FGM), their friendship bond comes in handy. When Resian goes on a hunger strike she says it is only Taiyo who can change her stand. When Taiyo is informed of Resian’s condition, she does not hesitate to offer herself for Resian’s redemption even when there are risks all over. While at Nasila, they have a lot of time sharing their views towards FGM. The discussions must have strengthened their hard stands towards FGM. It is from these discussions that they vow never to give in to FGM p2 272.273

    Fight against the two vagabonds and when they were first accosted in Nasila
    Taiyo and Resian are accosted by two callous young men and their coordination and friendship save them. The incident finds them while they are walking together where they had visited Maison for lunch. If the struggle had between two men versus one girl probably she would have been surmounted. Although most of the salvation is largely brought by Olarinkoi the fact that the two girls where together makes it easier for them to go about the ordeal. Their joint screaming and their escape unhurt is partly contributed by their togetherness p19, 140,141

    Outwitting Oloisudori
    The two girls hatch a scheme to outwit Oloisudori. They wrap the gifts he had brought them into a box and title it as a gift. They then plan how to execute the plan. They arrange on how Resian is to thank Oloisudori and give him the gift. They discuss the aim of the gesture; to clarify to Oloisudori the fact they cannot be cheated with gifts. From this co-operation, Resian manages to trick Oloisudori and tells off her father and later with Olarinkoi, they manage to leave Nasila p200,201,202,203,205,206,207,210

    Resian helping Taiyo to recover
    Taiyo is helped to recover fast from the harrowing experience of circumcision with the help of Resian by making a cuisine and counselling her p 275,276

    Resian finds solace in Taiyo during their father’s tongue-lashing moments
    Ole Kaelo is known for his sharp tongue most of which is directed to Resian. She had to seek refuge in Taiyo who consoles and strengthens her p 34. Taiyo found Resian’s complains, nagging and grumble about life in the new environment tolerable p35. Resian missed her when she was away facing Olarinkoi alone, she wished her sister would be there to sooth her p220

    United in their stand for education
    Resian stubbornly pushes the sister Taiyo to talk to their father so that they continue with the quest for education p4,33,54,121, they eventually join Egerton university on 5thSeptember through the help of Minik ene Nkoitoi p284
    |In conclusion, it is clear from the above illustrations that strong friendship bonds can help friend go about hard experiences and overcome them in their lives.
  3. Optional set text. (20 marks)
    The Short story:

    INTRODUCTION.
    In the short story, A silent Song by Leonard Kibera, physically challenged people undergo various hurdles in life as a result of disability. Mbane’s lameness and blindness presents hurdles to him as he navigates through life.

    POINTS OF INTERPRETION.
    P1: Incapacitation.
    Disability incapacitates Mbane on the streets. In the gloom of eternal night, things such as beauty, day and night have no meaning. His world only responded to what he could feel, hear and run away from.
    Although his brother marries at his age, he would never be able to reach out his hand in fulfilmentof his life in the same way. He could only yearn impotently beyond the reach of darkness and lameness.

    P2 : Solitary life.
    Mbane’s life is described as one of retreat. In his solitary life he has been speaking to himself in his thoughts. He has no one to address. When the streets were deserted, he retired to the back lane abandoned on the streets.

    P3: Pain and suffering.
    Mbane has been brought home by his brother and he is unwell. The pain in his stomach and spine paralyses him. Mbane also suffers from emotional turmoil. He goes through moments of bitter self pity arising from hid lameness and blindness.

    P4: Begging.
    Mbane earns his living begging on the streets. The urban dwellers occasionally drop a copper in his hat. As he begs, some men and women curse him through the gay people he had come to know how money was the essence of life.

    Conclusion.
    In conclusion, it is clear that the physically challenged contend solitary life, pain, suffering and vulnerability.
